Is using humor a good way to reduce public speaking nerves?

Many public speaking anxiety (stage fright) sufferers rely on humor or a well-scripted joke to overcome anxiety; however is the reward worth the risk? Many seasoned speakers advise that a humorous introduction well set the tone for a presentation placing the presenter and audience at ease for the message. Can telling a joke or humorous story help reduce your public speaking anxiety?

If you are planning on telling a story or joke make sure you're prepared. Many public speaking anxiety (stage fright) sufferers find immediate comfort after telling a successful joke. However, be warned: an unsuccessful joke or story can create more public speaking anxiety than you may have already been experiencing.

A public speaking engagement is not an opportune time to try out new material. Seasoned comedians like Jay Leno rehearse their jokes on more intimate audiences prior to hitting the big stage. First, make sure that you are reciting a joke or story that you have had success with in the past. Additionally, public speaking anxiety (stage fright) can severely undermine the timing that is necessary to telling a successful joke or story.

What is the best way to prepare to use humor when public speaking? Commonly, your opening sentences should be rehearsed repeatedly. If you are telling a joke make sure that you know the content and timing of your story.
