Informative Speech

The purpose of an informative speech is to provide useful, interesting and practical information to your audience.

It is important to carefully construct and execute a discernable structure - introduction, body and conclusion - when preparing your informative speech. In addition, public speaking anxiety can really undermine your efforts. Utilize these tips in conjunction with our tips for overcoming public speaking anxiety and an effective natural herbal supplement:

Choose an appropriate topic

If you’re not passionate about your topic, you will not construct and deliver an effective informational speech. You may also want to avoid topics that evoke too much emotion with your audience such as religion, abortion, etc. In addition, pick a topic for your informative speech to which your audience can relate. For example, pick a local issue or a topic for your informational speech that is relevant to the demographics of your audience.

Research, research, research

Regardless of the amount of expertise you have on your chosen topic, you need more going into your informative speech. Provide at least four credible sources for your informative speech. In addition, consider developing your own content from an interview, sample or questionnaire. Providing content that is not accessible to everyone will help solidify your audience’s opinion of you as an expert on your topic. Conversely, not owning your informative speech content may result in unnecessary public speaking anxiety (stage fright). Make sure that you are the foremost expert in the room on your topic. An unsolicited expert audience member can really diminish your informative speech.

Outline your structure and key objectives

Great public speakers always rely on a well-drafted outline. You do not want to be the person that gets up in front of the audience and reads your informative speech verbatim; however, shooting from the hip may result in public speaking anxiety. Write down and memorize your first two sentences. In addition, write down each transition statement verbatim and try and commit them to memory. Outline your content and use the following structure to expand on your topic and exhibit your expertise:

Start strong

Your audience needs to know your name and purpose for presenting to them, but they do not need to know that in the first sentence of your informative speech. Instead, consider a great quote or startling statistic from your research to begin your informative speech that will grab their attention right away. Also, public speaking anxiety (stage fright) is usually at its height at the beginning of any public speech, so make sure you are prepared.

Utilize visual aids

You cannot underestimate the value of strong visual aids for your informative speech. Well-constructed electronic depictions of your message will be well-received, but don’t undervalue the use of good old-fashioned handouts and posters. Ultimately, your informative speech will be better communicated with visual support than without. In addition, visual aids are great tools for overcoming stage fright.

Engage your audience

Audience participation is an essential tool for gaining and retaining your audience’s attention during an informative speech. You may want to conduct a simple group opinion pool with a show of hands. In addition, you can offer more elaborate results by asking for written responses that can be anonymous. At a minimum, pose at least two questions to your audience throughout your informative speech. A word of caution: An unanswered question is awkward and may result in public speaking anxiety. You may want to plant a friendly respondent to your question prior to taking the podium.
