Many students find choosing an appropriate persuasive speech topic very daunting. Consider the following ideas for generating a great persuasive speech topic.
Make sure you chose a topic for your persuasive speech that you feel passionately about; however, avoid any topics that you feel so strongly about that you cannot begin to present their position effectively.
Trying to persuade your college peers that your hometown in Iowa needs a new water tower will fall on glossy eyes. Instead, chose a persuasive speech topic that your audience can get passionate about, even if you think their initial position is strongly opposed to your position.
Make sure that your persuasive speech objective is achievable. If you are trying to persuade your persuasive speech audience to fight world hunger you may be in a little over your head. Instead, consider tackeling a more specific issue: how can you fight hunger in your community?
If you want to argue for the legalization of marijuana in your persuasive speech you will not be alone. Make sure that you pick a topic that only you will be presenting. You can choose a common topic, but argue it from a very specific angle; for example, present how marijuana should be legalized for terminally ill cancer patients.
Some topics – race, religion, abortion – elicit a great amount of emotions for some people; you may want to avoid a heated persuasive speech audience. Also, your ability to alter someone’s opinion on one of these issues in a three to five minute speech is unlikely.
